Introduction
December 1941 the United States had been the victim of an unprovoked attack at Pearl Harbor, HI by the Japanese.
The battle in the Pacific would be waged in a totally different fashion then that which took place in Europe. The battles in Europe were for the most part land battles once the issue of control of the Mediterranean Sea had been settled at the Battle of Cape Matapan between the British and the Italians.
The fighting in the Pacific would be a slower but no less deadly pace; the battles would be for control of the seas and small islands essential if the Allies were to approach the main island of Japan. This is the main reason why the Japanese attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, HI. Their intention was to neutralize our fleet so that we would not be able to threaten them from the sea. Without our navy to control the sea we would not be able to approach Japan.
The United States had managed to salvage a great deal of their naval forces and what was not salvageable was replaced by the efforts of the United States industrial efforts (for example the airplanes and Liberty ships that factories focused on building).
Eight short hours after the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, Hi they launched air raids in the Philippines and landed an invasion force on the main island near Manila the capital of the Philippines.
What started at Pearl Harbor, Hi would begin roughly three years of a naval and land battle for control of the Pacific Ocean region that ends with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Japan’s unconditional surrender onboard the USS Missouri.
